What is NC TEACH?
North Carolina Teachers of Excellence for All CHildren (NC TEACH) is an alternative teacher preparation program designed to recruit, train, support, and retain mid-career professionals as they become licensed teachers in NC. Developed jointly by the NC State Board of Education and the UNC Board of Governors, NC TEACH is a program of the University of North Carolina-General Administration and is housed in the UNC Center for School Leadership Development in Chapel Hill, NC. Established in 2000, more than 1,500 people have become licensed teachers through the NC TEACH program.
NC TEACH begins with an intensive pre-service program designed to prepare teachers for immediate classroom entrance. After successful completion of this and other licensure requirements, participants will be recommended by an LEA for a provisional teaching license when they enter a teaching position in a North Carolina public school. While teaching, participants complete requirements for full licensure through NC TEACH at one of the participating host universities. It takes a minimum of 12 months to complete the program and be recommended for a standard professional 1 license.
Each host university conducts its own schedule and delivery of classes and offers varying licensure areas but they are all based on a common curriculum. Host universities may offer their coursework online, face to face or blend both delivery models. The NC TEACH curriculum was designed around the premise that teaching is a highly developmental process and includes comprehensive training in:
- The Role of The Teacher, The Learner & The School
- Curriculum & Instruction: Effective Teaching Strategies
- Classroom Organization & Management
- Diversity
- Exceptional Children
- Instructional Technology
- Content Area Teaching Methods
NC TEACHers currently serve in more than 85 counties in all regions of the state. We hope that you will choose NC TEACH as your pathway to becoming a fully licensed teacher in North Carolina. We are here to help you meet the challenges and reap the rewards of this exciting profession.
