Obtaining a Teaching Position

Teachers who plan to seek licensure through NC TEACH should begin their search for a teaching position as soon as possible. NC TEACHers can seek employment in any North Carolina public school, including charter schools. NC TEACH is available to guide and assist participants in their search for employment, but participants must assume primary responsibility for finding employment.

The NC TEACH program does not support out-of-field placement of teachers. Out-of-field is defined as teaching 50% or more of your courses outside of your licensure area.  Thus, NC TEACHers must find an in-field teaching position in a public school. Otherwise, they will not be eligible to continue in the program.

Employment decisions are made at the local school system (LEA-local education agency) level, and NC TEACH cannot guarantee teaching positions for program participants. NC TEACH does offer via its host universities many opportunities for job search preparation such as resume writing, mock interviews, interview training and job fairs focused on lateral entry teachers.

Host university coordinators are often the best source of information about available teaching positions in the area, due to their excellent knowledge and connections to surrounding LEAs.  Please rememberwith any career or job change there is an element of re-training that can take time.  Do not be discouraged in your job search—over 90% of NC TEACHers are employed quickly.  Some licensure areas may require more flexibility and patience on the part of the job seeker.  However, there are a number of resources that you can use to ensure that you find the right job that for you.
